RACECOURSE BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MEMORIAL SCHOLAR
Market Rasen Racecourse is today inviting nominations for the Conditional Jockey to be the new Tom Halliday Memorial Scholar.
The annual award , through which a rising young jockey is sponsored by the Racecourse and receives support and advice in areas such as schooling, nutrition and media training from acknowledged experts, is named in memory of Tom Halliday, who died in 2005 at the age of 20 after a fall at the Lincolnshire track. It has the full support of the Halliday Family.
It is designed to give a promising young rider a ‘leg up’ in his career, and it is hoped that the winner will be seen in action riding at Market Rasen throughout the year.
The Racecourse is asking the public, as well as racing professionals to nominate suitable candidates.
Market Rasen Managing Director Pip Kirkby said; “ Everyone here has been delighted with the success of this award as a positive Memorial to Tom. This years winner Oliver Williams, whose exploits have included riding 100-1 winners at Huntingdon, has used his award to help him along the road to an ambition of training , while two of the happiest days here in the last year have seen Tom’s brother James, the 2008 recipient, ride his first double and then go even better and record his first treble, with his proud parents watching on”
She added: “ Our racegoers at Market Rasen are knowledgeable and supportive and I hope they, as well as Trainers, Jockeys and others in the sport will nominate potential scholars. The most important thing, to us, is that the recipient comes from an area where he would hope to pick up rides here throughout the year.”
Anyone is welcome to send in a nomination. They should be sent by email to pip.kirkby@jockeyclubracecourses.com or sent by letter to her at Market Rasen Racecourse.
The closing date for nominations is Friday 17th September. The name of the new scholar will be announced during the high profile Equinox Meeting on Saturday 25th September.

MARKET Rasen Racecourse is set to welcome a legend of the sport of horse racing at its next fixture.
Bob Champion and Aldaniti made Grand National history 29 years ago when the jockey defeated cancer and his horse overcame a career-threatening injury to win the world’s greatest steeplechase.
Their feat was made into a movie – Champions.
Now Bob is travelling 10,000 miles to all 60 British racecourses in the space of 60 days to raise funds for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and the Injured Jockeys Fund.
He is at Market Rasen Racecourse for the fixture on Friday 11 June.
The trip began at Ascot Racecourse in mid-April, and finishes at the Berkshire racecourse again during Royal Ascot the week after he is in Lincolnshire.
Pip Kirkby, the racecourse’s managing director, said: “Bob Champion is one of the most famous ever jump jockeys and we will be delighted to welcome him during his ‘Champions 60:60 Charity Challenge’.”
The event’s website www.champions6060.org.uk has all the information for people to find out more and to register for a place to join Bob Champion at the races.
The first race on Friday 11 June is at 2pm.
